Welling United 3-2 Truro City

Coming into the game, both Welling United were keen to pick up the points that would allay any doubt surrounding their future participation in the Vanarama National League South.

At the end of the ninety plus minutes, it was Welling that were able to celebrate their survival having completed a come from behind victory.
Setting out with a 4-4-3 system, the White Tigers took the game to their hosts in the early stages of the game but the Welling defence proved hard to penetrate.
It took twenty minutes for either side to create a goal scoring opportunity, but Chris Todd was well off target with what turned out to be their only goal attempt in the first half.

Eventually, Welling came into the game and Dan Walker twice created opportunities for Alex Cathline. The first was a first time near post effort that flew wide. The second was on target but lacked the power to trouble Tom McHale.
As Welling continued to look for an opening and went ahead from a free kick. Rhys Murrell-Williamson delivered and Ben Martin rose to head home.

Sam Hatton fired over an Walker had a shot saved before Welling shot themselves in the foot two minutes before the interval. Niall Thompson found Andrew Neal and he crossed into an area of uncertainty that resulted in Martin passing back beyond goalkeeper Chris Lewington and into his own net.
Four minutes into the second half it went from bad to worse for Welling  A good swift Truro break ended with Neal finishing from Dan Smith’s low cross.

Hatton fired a shot in that was cleared off the line just out of the reach of Phil Walsh then Murrell-Williamson had a free kick saved.
Danny Waldren and Walker were off target for Welling and in a rare raid at the other end Cody Cooke also failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

An increasing number of Truro fouls eventually proved costly when Murrell-Williamson curled a free kick into the bottom corner.
Two minutes later, Welling went ahead when substitute Tyrone Marsh burst through and fired home in style.
Smith fired well wide for Truro before Alex Cathline struck the post deep into injury time with McHale well beaten.

Victory took Welling up to fourteenth in the table, the highest they have been all season.

TISA Statement on Stadium for Cornwall Ground Share

Truro Independent Supporters Association(TISA) cautiously welcomes the news today that there has been at last a degree of clarity about where Truro City will play its football in the years to come.  Whilst it was always preferable for TCFC to have its own purpose built stadium, sadly this was not something that the clubs owners could deliver. The next best option is to be part of the exciting Stadium for Cornwall project which will hopefully help the football club integrate more successfully with the Cornish community.  We also welcome the fact that rather than having to play outside of the county in Torquay until the new Stadium for Cornwall is built, instead we will be playing at Bodmin Town’s ground which will also benefits them by making lasting improvements in their ground infrastructure.  This is something that TISA pushed for in our ‘Keep Truro in Cornwall’ campaign last year and we are glad that common sense has at last prevailed.

Truro City 1 Ebbsfleet 1

Sam Deering’s second-half equaliser replicated the score from Treyew Road of last season but the single point saw Fleet slip a further two behind Maidenhead United at the top of the table. Fleet, who were denied by the woodwork, some last-gasp defending and heroic goalkeeping, must now hope to gain maximum points from Easter’s double-header and hope Truro prove as redoubtable when they host the league leaders.
Daryl McMahon’s side were unchanged from the eleven that eased past Welling 5-1 last weekend and actually turned up at the ground before some of Truro’s own players who were caught in traffic, a fate that befell many of the travelling Ebbsfleet support as well.
On a blustery but warm afternoon in Cornwall, the game took a little while to get going with Fleet adopting their usual measured approach, trying to pick apart the home defence. The white shirts weren’t sitting back, however, and seemed more than capable of testing the Fleet’s back line.
They twice tried their luck from distance in the opening exchanges, Ben Adelsbury seeing a leg deflect his shot over the bar and then full back Alex Hartridge also tested his range, sending another effort over the bar.
Former Plymouth front man Tyler Harvey was proving to be something of a nuisance and he drew a save from Nathan Ashmore before going even closer when a clever effort over the Fleet goalkeeper needed the attentions of Kenny Clark to clear out of the six-yard box.
Sam Deering then saw a shot turned behind from a Jack Connors pass, while Danny Kedwell diverted the corner into the box against a Truro hand but the referee was unconvinced by the penalty appeal.
Truro went close again on 21 minutes when a long throw almost caught out Clark with the ball skipping off his head and against his own crossbar. At the other end, Fleet weren’t finding the target and Kedwell saw a header fly over the bar from an Anthony Cook delivery.
The home side picked up a couple of bookings for fouls in midfield but it was from a Fleet infringement that Truro took the lead three minutes before half-time. Adelsbury was 25 yards out but sent a fine free-kick soaring over Ashmore before dipping under the bar to leave Fleet with it all to do.
After a fairly shot-shy first 45, Fleet’s determination shone through in the second half, with Bradley Bubb brought on at the break in place of Darren McQueen. But the visitors’ drive came at a cost as they lost skipper Kedwell to a suspected broken arm seven minutes after the restart, the No.9 colliding with Truro centre back Ben Gerring and immediately requiring treatment.
Sean Shields was his replacement and before the Fleet could start to feel sorry for themselves, the substitute’s introduction was timely. Two minutes after coming on, Shields got into space courtesy of a foray down the flank and delivered a cross that Deering of all people met with head to steer it past goalkeeper Tom McHale.
With that goal, Fleet’s tails were up and they went at Truro, doing everything but score a winner. Bubb fired just over after his one-two with fellow sub Shields carved open the home defence and then Jack Powell’s ambitious drive from distance clattered off the crossbar.
Straight after that, on 63 minutes, his midfield partner Andy Drury let fly with another effort which also came back off the crossbar, falling for Bubb who connected but saw the ball smothered by a desperate block from McHale. Powell then curled a free-kick just over after Cook was fouled on the edge of the box, but Fleet fans were baying for a spot kick, convinced it was inside the line.
Truro struggled to fashion a chance at the other end and when they did get it forward, Fleet looked dangerous on the break. With 15 minutes left, Bubb’s diving header from Shields’ cross was kept out by an excellent save by McHale while the goalkeeper was relieved as time ticked away when a defender cleared Clark’s header off the line. And still the keeper thwarted the visitors’ efforts when he pulled off another superb save from Drury’s 15-yard shot as Fleet’s final chance went begging in five minutes of time added on.
EUFC: Ashmore, Cook, Connors, McCoy, Phillips (Winfield 46), Clark, Powell, Drury, Kedwell (Shields 52), McQueen (Bubb 46), Deering. Subs: Jordan, Rance
TCFC: McHale, Bentley, Hartridge, Gerring, Richards, Smith, Adelsbury, Cooke, Neal, Harvey, Thompson (Afful 78). Subs: Todd, Yetton, Brett, Allen

Margate 2 Truro City 1

THE WHITE Tigers slipped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Margate.
It was Truro City who came out of the blocks the quickest as we posed a number of early questions of the hosts’ rear-guard and had the ball in the net on nine minutes only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
However, shortly afterwards Margate had their noses in front somewhat against the run of play when Akindayini found the net.
We failed to let our heads drop and went close on 20 minutes with a header that crept just wide of the target before Cody Cooke was unlucky with a strike from distance.
Just past the half-hour mark and Ben Adelsbury tried his luck with a powerful effort that was well saved by the home ‘keeper.
As a niggle started to creep into the game, Tyler Harvey saw yellow but there was joy for The White Tigers as half-time approached when that man Rocky Neal notched the equaliser.
Going into the second half back on level terms, it didn’t take long after the restart for us to fall behind again when Akindayini grabbed his second goal of the game to beat Tom McHale.
It proved to be a big blow for The White Tigers, particularly as we had worked so hard to level matters.
As the clock ticked down, it was Margate’s turn to have a goal ruled out as the closing stages become edgy.
Try as we might, we just couldn’t find an equalising goal. A free-kick right at the death went close before stoppage time saw a teasing ball launched into the area where Ben Gerring met the ball with a towering header at the far post that landed inches over.
There was still time for a flick-on to reach Niall Thompson with virtually the last touch but his downward header was well saved as Margate held on to claim a vital three points in their quest to escape the relegation zone.
