Truro City fall at home to high-flying Dover Athletic

By Rhod Mitchell

Truro City 0 Dover Athletic 3

CITY were unable to make it three Blue Square Bet South home wins in a row as the promotion-chasing visitors, who have now not lost on the road for a year flew home to Kent with the points.

The final scoreline though rather flattered Dover with bottom club City right in the game until the closing stages on a foul night at Treyew Road.

In the first period City were arguably the better side but went in 1-0 down at the break.

They conceded eight minutes before the interval when Ricky Modeste's cross from the left caused confusion in the home goal with Ben May deflecting the ball home despite the desperate efforts of Ben Williams to prevent the ball crossing the line.

Just before City had come close when Joe Broad's low drive was well saved by Dover keeper Mitch Walker.

After the interval Truro pushed forward creating several half chances without getting the run of the ball in front of goal.

And as they pushed forward they left gaps at the back and 15 minutes from time Billy Bricknell made it 2-0 with substitute Callum Willcock completing the scoring late on.

Some positives to come out of the match. I thought we could have been 2 or 3 goals up at half time and felt that their goal was against the run of play. The 3:0 score flattered Dover. Yes they came good in the second half, but if they are top three, I don't think that we need to fear anyone IF we can continue to put out our best 11 and they remain free from injury and fresh. As for the crowd, I do wonder how many diehard Truro City fans there are in Cornwall. It is easy to turn up in the sunshine when the team are on top. Noticed that there are improvements are a foot - witness the sound system. Just seen their first goal again - a soft one!

PUDDY:
Both teams produced a decent game in the most appalling of conditions.
Truro battled hard but with no luck and got little from a clinically exact and technically proficient outfit who must be promotion favourites. Their use of all their subs in the last 20 or so minutes really rubbed salt in the Truro wounds on the heavy pitch and the game was for the taking.
It's really the teams in the lower half of the table we need to be taking points from.
No need to be downhearted over this one.

TOM TRUST:
Yes, 3-0 flattered them when if it had finished 1-0 either way the loser couldn't really have complained. Tired legs, three or four players below par (no names: not helpful on a public site) but Kieffer continues to improve. He's toughening up, getting to more balls in the air than at the start of the season, bothering a few centre halves. A poor gate, though: soccer on the telly, a foul, cold night, not even St Darren would have ventured out to see his side on a night like tonight. Agreed that if Dover are a promotion candidate we really can feel aggrieved by the embargo (no reply from the FA yet, by the way) as we only lost by more than 1-0 because we piled forward, cup-match-style, looking for the equaliser so that they broke with 3 on 2 and for once their sub wasn't offside! We had more shots on goal and more corners than them, but that's football! Our set pieces are poor, though.
